Sublime Text Distraction Free Mode Keyboard Shortcut not working on PC

Well ladies and gentlemen I wasted an hour on this silly problem. The shortcut is supposed to be shift + f11 on a PC. I must have tried this shortcut 100 times and for some reason I thought maybe if I hit the shortcut code keys enough, they would work. Well, as you probably could guess, the keyboard shortcut never worked.

So since I run into this problem a lot I read my past blog on detecting and fixing keyboard shortcut conflicts and that let me know that for some reason shift + f11 was calling the prompt_save_as command. I’m not sure why because when I looked it up, it said that it’s default setting was:

Key Bindings – Default

[prettify]
{ “keys”: [“ctrl+shift+s”], “command”: “prompt_save_as” },
[/prettify]

I tried to overwrite that by adding this inside my:

Key Bindings – User

[prettify]
{ “keys”: [“shift+f11”], “command”: “prompt_save_as” },
[/prettify]

But sadly, that did not work. All it did was help me pull larger clumps of my hair out of my head.

I took a stab in the dark and used different keyboard shortcuts until I used one that work. Here it is.

Key Bindings – User

[prettify]
{ “keys”: [“ctrl+1”], “command”: “toggle_distraction_free” },
[/prettify]
Note: Don’t use the comma if it is the last item in your Key Bindings.

That did the trick and now I love toggling in and out of ‘toggle distraction free mode’. This mode is like Nirvana. Whenever I am in it, I feel like I hear the Bells of St. Peter. Maybe this is a side effect of the torture I endured trying to get something as simple as a keyboard shortcut to work.

There has to be a better way. But until I find it, I’ll just blog about my blues and hope I save someone some time.
